As a software trainer who works with adult learners, efficient planning is a must prior to training sessions. Adults behave in self-directed ways when it comes to learning. Whereas children might be accustomed to being told what to do, guiding adults requires a different approach. You might have a plan in mind and look up to find that each adult in your software training class has already started fiddling with the computers. Use these steps to keep everyone moving at the same pace.
Planning a Training Session
When planning to train adults, think about their specific needs. They may be using educational software to strengthen their grammatical skills or to learn a new trade. Determine what information they need to walk away with to effectively use the software in the future.
Prepare a visual presentation using presentation software or a simple handout. This will help you to keep your training class on the same page. If you need the class to click on specific icons or enter login information, include these details in the presentation.
Conducting the Class
When you’re ready to start the class, create a structure for asking questions. You might want students to raise their hands as they stumble their way through computer navigation or wait until you circle the computer lab and help them individually. Thinking through this in advance will allow you to create a sense of order in the class.
Some adults will jump ahead and possibly experiment with other aspects of the software. Let everyone know this is okay to do after you have delivered the key pieces of information.
